My Gay Marriage

It started back in 2003 just before my 33rd birthday. I had lunch with my friend J.P., and within a day, Ontario Court of Appeal confirmed that current Canadian law on marriage violated the equality provisions in the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms in being restricted to heterosexual couples.

Then that November, we had lunch again and the Goodridge decision came out. And our lunch dates always corresponded with the legislature's votes that keep gay marriage alive in MA. Only once did we do this deliberately when the legislature was debating whether or not to put it on the ballot. Otherwise, it was just a coincidence, we'd get back from lunch and something really good would happen.

Then we had lunch yesterday for the first time in nearly a year, completely unaware that there were any court cases pending. Then I got home today and Lo and Behold. The California Supreme Court overturned the gay marriage ban!

What is it about me and my friend having food together that makes the world a better place? I don't know, but it makes me really, really happy.
